Make your way through Prairietown where the year is 1863 and immerseyourself in the Civil War homefront and battlefront. Learn about Unionand Confederate camp life, battle tactics, food, various technologies used during wartime, and medicine including a field hospital tour and surgery demonstration. Feel the boom from a Civil War-era cannon firing and learn about the intricacies of Civil War artillery and the skill it took to work them. Fire an authentic Civil War-era rifle ($5). Ask President Abraham Lincoln, during his live presentation,about his presidency and what it was like leading the country during this tumultuous time. Listen to stories of women serving in uniform,and what lengths they went to in order to disguise their identity to take up arms. Experience a battle re-enactment each day at 2:30pm. Hear about the important role the 28th U.S. Colored Troops played during the war, and discover the impact of the war on free blacks in Indiana through an interactive play about the Roberts Settlement. Photos, artifacts and reproductions of Northwest Indiana Civil War regimental battle flags will tell the story of the Lake, Porter and LaPorte County men in blue who fought to preserve the Union - and ultimately to end slavery. This exhibit commemorates the 150th anniversary of the war's third year (1863), which ushered in the conflict's most pivotal engagement: the Battle of Gettysburg. One hundred or more Lake and Porter County men served in the three-day battle in early July in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, helping to earn a Union victory in what would become the war's turning point. One Crown Point colonel gave his life on the field during the battle's second day. Come learn his story and the facts and details behind the lives of many more region men and women who sacrificed during the Civil War. The South Shore Civil War Memorial Trail Expo will use special exhibits from the Indiana Historical Society, together with photos and local artifacts, to recreate this important story. Live demonstrations by Civil War reenactors from 8am to 5pm April 6, 7, 13, 20, 27 and 28. There will also be demonstrations on May 1 from 4pm to 7:30pm.

Copies of the anthology, America’s War: Talking About the Civil Warn and Emancipation on their 150th Anniversaries and the novel, March by Geraldine Brooks will be available for check out. Reflections of the Civil War: Meet Photographer Robert Morris

When looking at photos taken by Robert Morris, one cannot help but compare the beauty of his pieces to those of Ansel Adams. Join Morris as he shares how he captured the pictures from the black and white photography exhibit, Reflections of the Civil War. The library has been honored to have his work on display, which has been on loan from the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. Morris describes that “the old Civil War battlefields are haunting places. It seems the souls of those old soldiers still haunt the area where they fought and died.” Meet the photographer, Robert Morris as he shares tips on taking black and white photography. Learn what makes a good photograph as Robert uses his Reflections of the Civil War exhibit to illustrate some of these points. This cemetery is listed in Indiana’s Cemetery and Burial Grounds Registry of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. From Butler travel east on U.S. 6 to County Road 75 and turn right (south) on county Road 75. The cemetery is located approximately 1/4 mile on the right (west) side of County Road 75. It is just south of Big Run Church.

From Underground Railroad to Sundown Towns Gallery Talk

James Loewen, Ph.D., will present this gallery talk in conjunction with the exhibit Liberty on the Border, on view through May 8. Many Indiana and Michigan towns aided fugitive slaves prior to and during the Civil War, but between 1890 and 1930, there was a steady disappearance of African Americans residing in those states' rural areas. In his talk, Dr. Loewen explains how once abolitionist-minded communities gradually began to refuse the basic rights of African American citizens. Following his talk, Dr. Loewen will also sign copies of his books.

Whitewater Valley Railroad Excursion: Metamora Civil War & Steam Weekend

Come along and take a trip back in time with us. Be in the middle of the action as an Union Army attachment protects a Flagg Coal Company steam locomotive . While along the line a relentless group of Confederate soldiers plan and wait. On Saturday and Sunday Festivities will start at 10:30 AM in Historic Downtown Metamora, with four departures of a Flagg Coal Company locomotive at 11:00 AM, 1:10 PM, 3:00 PM, and 5:00 PM. Along the way, remnants of the Whitewater Canal locks, the restored Laurel Feeder Dam, and portions of the West Fork of the Whitewater River can be clearly seen. Fares for the scenic 70 minute, ten mile round trip adventure are $16 per person and children ages 2-12 ride for half price. Trips run rain or shine.

This novel is set during the Civil War, and flashbacks help flesh out the back story of his philosophical growth. Making Sense of the American Civil War, a reading and discussion series, is a project of the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association. Civil War and Sanitary Commission

Julie Reese DuVall, Civil War re-enactor, will give a presentation on the United States Sanitary Commission, which was the forerunner of the American Red Cross. More than 10,000 men and women served as volunteer Sanitary Commission workers during the Civil War. It was created by concerned civilians who saw the need to provide medically related help to those soldiers who would become victims of the fast approaching war and its resulting carnage. The Commission's goal was to provide to the soldiers, free of charge, the food, clothing and shelter, as well as medical care in the form of medicine, nurses, contract surgeons, inspectors and periodicals to help lessen the disastrous results of war. Julie has participated in the 130th Antietam re-enactment, Gettysburg National Military Park medical weekends, Midwest Civil War Civilian Conference, Ft. Wayne Civil War Days and much more. She has been published in several periodicals, including The Society of Civil War Surgeons magazine.

Slaves and the Civil War

Sharon Zonker is a retired teacher and long-time Civil War “buff.” Sharon and her husband, Jerry, have been interested in studying and visiting Civil War sites since their marriage. Their honeymoon was spent in Gettysburg. Since retirement, they spend part of the winter in Charleston, South Carolina where the war started 150 years ago this year. Over the years, Sharon has gathered stories and information focusing on the women and slaves connected with this nation-changing war. Sharon is a quilter and uses quilts to tell the stories she has gathered. She will be sharing about Northern and Southern women who made significant changes in how the role of women was seen and how it impacts women today. In this talk, Sharon will be focusing on the slaves who played an important role in the Civil War. The stories of the Underground Railroad, especially here in Indiana will also be a major focus of her talk.
